How old are the dogs in Puppy Happy Hour?
The class is open to puppies from 2 to 4 months of age. |

Could my dog catch a disease like Parvo by being around other dogs?
In order to participate in the class, all dogs must be current on their vaccinations and must receive regularly scheduled boosters. There will be no execeptions to this rule.
Even vaccinated dogs can become ill if their immune systems are compromised. Some diseases, such as Parvo, are so contagious that it is possible to track the germs into your house on the soles of your shoes. If your dog were to become ill, it would be almost impossible to trace the source of the infection.
When my puppy was a young dog, I compared these risks to the benefits. My dog was healthy and was always current on his shots. As a trainer, I knew that it was important that my adult dogs always be friendly with other dogs. As a rescuer, I know how difficult it can be place dogs that must be "only" dogs. For me, the benefits far outweighed the risks. Today, that pup is now a young adult who joyfully embraces the company of both dogs and humans.

Will my dog learn obedience commands like in a regular class?
While the focus of the class is socialization, we will be introducing training tools like the headcollar and leash. Puppies, like young children, have a very brief attention span. We will be playing games which will seem like great fun, while we are setting them up to be good obedience students later. If you continue to practice the games at home, it is entirely likely that your dog will learn a few commands in spite of himself.

Does my pup need Puppy Happy Hour?
In a perfect world, all puppies would be planned, wanted, and would stay with their mothers and siblings until they were twelve to sixteen weeks of age. Sometimes they leave the birth family as early as six weeks, which deprives them of the company of other dogs. Puppy Happy Hour attempts to replace some of that social interaction that is so necessary to the pup's development. Puppies that spend no time with other canines can develop behavior problems, including aggressiveness, later on in relating to dogs. Sometimes the behavior is so disturbing that the owners give the dog to the pound. Puppy Happy Hour helps to prevent these situations by giving the puppies a chance to learn to get along with each other, very much like Kindergarten taught you to share the crayons. |

What other subjects will the class cover?
We will discuss housetraining, crate training, feeding, vet care, toys, & interaction of the pet in relation to the other family members. It is also important to recognize that while some behaviors are cute and funny for a puppy, they can be destructive or dangerous as an adult dog. We will explore these every week as they arise. We will also discuss any other issues relating to your dog that you would like. |
Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations to the first class. |
